ATTORNEY: Teresa Rieger Housholder

A native of Southwest Missouri, and the daughter of Robert Lee Rieger and the late Linda Kay (Hixon) Rieger, Teresa (Anne) Rieger Housholder, was a 1988 graduate of Marshfield High School. Many may recall that she was actively involved in every music program offered by the Marshfield schools. She went on to Southwest Missouri State University (now Missouri State University) where she started out as a vocal performance music major but then discovered a passion for psychology, especially child psychology, and criminal justice studies.

In August of 1992, she participated in a 3- month internship at the Greene County Juvenile Justice Center. While there she worked as an informal probation officer supervising juveniles who had not progressed to the stage of formal probation. In December of 1992, Teresa graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a double minor in music and criminal justice studies. At that same time she was offered a position with the Greene County Juvenile Justice Center where she worked as a youth leader in the detention facility. Based upon her work at the Juvenile Justice Center and her love for children, she chose to go to law school so that she could represent children.

In August of 1994, she started work on her law degree at the University of Missouri – Kansas City where she emphasized, again, children. While in law school, she joined the Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity and became the first alumni-student liaison and assisted in reactivating the alumni chapter. In May of 1997, Teresa graduated with her Juris Doctorate and after taking the bar exam, she returned to Marshfield.

In August of 1998, Teresa began working for the Department of Social Services, Division of Legal Services (DLS) in the Protective Services Unit as a staff attorney. The unit was so named because the attorneys represented what was then known as the Division of Family Services (DFS) specializing in child abuse and neglect cases. As a staff attorney, she represented DFS (now known as the Children’s Division) in 10 of Missouri’s judicial circuits including the 30th circuit which covers Webster, Dallas, Polk, Hickory and Benton counties. In August of 2001, she was promoted to the position of Managing Attorney where she supervised the attorneys in the Protective Services Unit in 23 additional circuits. In October of 2001, she was transferred to the Springfield DLS office where she was promoted to Deputy Assistant Director and was responsible for supervising the Springfield and the Joplin DLS offices.

In September of 2005, she resigned from DLS to open her own office in Marshfield so that she could represent children directly in juvenile, paternity and dissolution actions. Teresa is the proud mother of a delightful child and the wife of Keith Martin Housholder.
